The path I had originally planned to take was under surprise!construction, so I had a bit of a detour that added on miles.
The start of the trail today was mostly on sidewalks along busy roads - not exactly picturesque or motivating. But about 5 miles down the road I turned off and made it to the Mohawk Trail, which will eventually turn into the Erie Canal. The trees and water in the distance was a very welcome sight!
The original goal for today was to make it to the actual canal and to Lock 7 - which I totally accomplished
The trail was lovely here, with views of the water the whole time and greenery and trees along the path. However, it was a little frustrating too. There were no signs about where I was or how far it was to any towns. I asked a few people along the way and got directions, but then the part of the trail that was supposed to lead to a park was closed, so I had to get on the road again and take an alternate route. Which led to nowhere.
There was no end and no place to set up camp for the night, so Anna and I just kept walking and walking until we stumbled into Schenectady. Asked a few people if they knew of a place to stay for the night and ended up in a very creepy Days Inn.
Met quite a few friendly people along the way, which really helps when I'm unsure and doubting my whole plan throughout the day.
