08/01/2011 - Saturday
The trip was short, only about two hours, and it involved getting out and catching a small boat across a stretch of water, then waiting for the bus to come across on a much larger ferry.  After arriving in Copacabana we set off to find a hostel.

After being knocked back at the first hostel, which was one recommended by lonely planet, we tried about 10 more (no exaggeration), and there were no vacancies in any of them, except for extremely expensive private rooms.  It turned out that just after New years eve many Bolivians travel to Copacabana to holiday, and most accommodation in the town was booked out.

We had two choices- either book a trip to Isla del Sol straight away, and hope there is a hostel there with vacancies, or skip Isla del Sol and head straight for Arequipa in Peru, our next destination.  We chose to skip Isla del Sol, and the reed islands.  I've heard mixed reviews about Lake Titicaca, some loved it, some said it was kind of boring, but we would have to wait for another time to find out ourselves.

Before we left, we ate at a local restaurant and sampled a delicious local trout dish - 'trucha al ajo y pune de papas', garlic trout with mashed potatoes.

By now I had gotten used to the border police saying "Ay, Australia! Canguros!" and imitating a kangaroo bouncing, and like clockwork, the border police at the Peruvian border said the same thing.

At the border we got a nice look at the lake with the sun setting above it, then drove all the way to Puno, on the western side of the lake, and waited an hour at the bus terminal before getting a very nice semi-cama bus to Arequipa.  The company was called Cruz del Sur, and the bus was as good as one from Argentina.  Arrived in Arequipa around 4am, and caught a taxi from the bus terminal to The Point hostel, that luckily had some spare beds.  I'm not sure if our new roomies appreciated us
arriving with our bags and things at 5am.
