Where I stayed
June 15th to 18th - Gillian's mini farm
On the way to stay with a Kiwi (that’s a person from New Zealand, for all you Americans) in the little town of Ordway, we passed through Trinidad. This town commemorates its mining history with a giant golden canary in a cage on the main street (don’t ask me what they mined, I’m sure I read about it, but I can’t remember). I have seen better monuments to miners in other towns, but at least Trinidad’s is unique. I believe they must be the only town in the world with a giant canary on their main street.
Ordway is one of those neat little old-fashioned towns that you see in old American movies (or even newer ones, like Sweet Home Alabama). Everyone knows everyone, everyone is friendly, and no one looked at me strangely when I drove a ride-on lawnmower along the main street.
After just a few days tending Gillian’s goats and garden, she told us she had some friends who needed their deck refinished and would put us up for as long as it took us to get the job done. So we packed our bags and headed north to Colorado Springs.
