Warnemunde is a charming seaside village, while Rostock is another small town about 15 minutes away by train. Both towns are located in northern Germany along the Baltic sea. We visited in late June but that was the off-season & it was still cool and a bit rainy. We walked around the small shops of the seaport, then bought inexpensive train tickets for the local train to Rostock. The only confusing part of the trip was determining which tram line to take once we arrived in Rostock. There were 6 or 8 tram lines, our map was confusing, we spoke no German, and the signage was very limited. The good part was that our cruise ship was in port until 10pm and it was only 11am, so we had plenty of time to get lost on the tram and then find our way back to the ship. Fortunately, we made it to the cute downtown Rostock pedestrian area and walked around some historic churches and the outdoor fruit market.

Cute area, nice architecture and lovely outdoor spaces to gather and people watch. Life is lived in such a pleasant outdoor way in Europe and I just love that. None of this rushing off to the Target or Wal-Mart in a giant SUV and then parking a mile from the store in a giant asphalt lot. I love the emphasis on walking everywhere and the support of public transportation. I wish we would encourage and financially support the use of public transportation in America. Maybe it would not only cut down on our pollution and traffic but also our stress as families and commuters. Plus it's healthier to walk from shop to shop and complete your errands.

With my paler skin and lighter hair, I must have passed for German, because so many people spoke to me in German before they realized I was American. We found great sales on well-made German sandals. Why didn't it occur to me that sometimes the exchange rate & shopping for local products can work in your favor? Finally the light went on in my head! Before we leave Europe I'm stocking up on German shoes in Germany, Italian leather, olive oil & ceramics in Italy, etc.

So, I admit. I have been able to give up some American habits (like driving everywhere in the car), but the consumption habit is a little more difficult to break.
