We rode the S-bahn and U-bahn trains throughout the city and stayed at a hotel near Potsdamer Platz. Until a few years ago, this area was "no man's land" because the Berlin Wall ran past it. After the wall fell in 1989, it became a barren wasteland until major reconstruction projects and skyscrapers were built. Today there are international companies like Sony and Daimler Chrysler, hotel chains, restaurants, and cinemas on every block. Major highlights of our quick visit to Berlin included the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, portions of the old Berlin Wall, Alexanderplatz which was a major stop in East Berlin, the glass spiral of the Reichstag building, and the Pergamon museum of ancient art to name just a few.
After our quick tour of Berlin, we flew to Copenhagen, Denmark, stayed two nights and then boarded our ship for a 12-day Baltic Cruise.
