getting to the cenotes was easy enough, a short collectivo ride took us into cool caves with fresh water good enought for swimming. So we thought until samson discovered mr dirty having a bath behind a few stalecmites.
getting to tulum wasnt a problem, but once we arrived we realised that we had truely arrived in mexicans yucatan region /the very same region that houses cancun and the likes. The first couple of places were asking for 210peso *20usd* for a double bed in a DORM, or 275 pesos *27usd* for a private cabana with mosquitos. Ridiculosly expensive, no thankyou. We opted instead to catch an expensive taxi *expensive after bargaining* to the beachside and found a 220 peso on the beach cabana. expensive but much much better.
After that stressful ordeal we sat back, had a seafood dinner and listened to the waves crash as we fell asleep safely in our mosquito net.

Hey - I love this blog! I hope life in Mexico is similar now as in 2005. My girlfriend and I plan to make a trip to the Cancun region during the holidays. Would you have any advice for finding a beach cottage somewhere relaxing but near to decent food, cave swimming, etc (without paying $250/night)? Thanks - and thanks especially for writing such an awesome blog - it rejuvenates my longing to get back on the road. --Mike (Austin)
