Our plan for today was to bike the 30 miles or so into Monterey, where we would meet up with our CouchSurfing hosts Lisa and Patrick. After a sleepless night of hearing what we were sure was a wild boar rummaging around our campsite, we didn't feel so up to the really hilly ride we had ahead. From what we had been told by local cyclists, the ride was going to consist of miles of climbing, huge downhills, and then more climbing all over again. All this on roads with hairpin turns, lots of blind spots and very narrow shoulders.

We slowly started to get ready for the day, and partway through breakfast we broke down and called Lisa. We were a bit nervous, because we had changed our plans with her about 3 times in the past day and didn't want to mess with her schedule. Within the first couple seconds of the conversation, we could tell that she was going to be an awesome host! We told her about our concerns for being able to complete the 30 mile ride before nightfall. Without hesitation, Lisa said that she would pick us up so that we could spend the day enjoying Monterey instead of killing ourselves biking. We felt slightly guilty for wimping out, but gladly accepted the offer and started packing up for the day.

Terrance, our friend from the campsite, stopped by as we were packing up and offered us some of his left over breakfast. As he was packing up for the day, he broke 7 eggs (not sure why he thought it was smart to bike with eggs) and had to cook them all. After finishing about 5 he was stuffed and brought them over to share. We talked for a bit about our plans for the day, and because we were feeling a bit guilty about catching a ride, Erika very carefully left out the fact that we would not actually be biking to our destination... We wished him luck on the rest of his trip and headed out of the campground.

As we were sitting at the campground entrance waiting for Lisa to come save us, it crossed our minds that Terrance would probably be biking out soon and he would catch us in the act of cheating! We started getting really nervous about being caught in the act and even thought about biking down the road so that he wouldn't see us as he left. We wanted to call Lisa and tell her to HURRY, but there is no cell service in Big Sur, so we just had to wait it out and take the consequences of Erika's lie. After about 15 minutes Terrance still hadn't passed us and Lisa pulled up fist pumping to good country music. It was going to be a really good day. We quickly loaded our bikes into her pickup and took off. We made it without getting caught!!

About 5 minutes down the road, Erika realized that she left her phone on the fence near the entrance of the campground. We had to turn around and were so sure we would get caught by Terrance this time. Lisa zoomed back, and Erika jumped out of the car, grabbed her phone, and hopped right back in as fast as she could. We took off, and once again, got away!

Once in Monterey, we got to meet Sweet Pea, Lisa's adorable cockapoodle. Boy, was she excited to have company. We made plans with Lisa to go to a wine tasting after we got all cleaned up (it had been days since we last showered!). We had never been to a wine tasting before, and what better place to wine taste than wine country. Lisa took us to A Taste Of Monterey where she treated us to an awesome first wine tasting. The tasting room had a great view that over looked the ocean. It was so much fun!

After the wine tasting we drove to the local animal shelter to play with some of the puppies. It was really hard for Lisa to go home without one. We even thought about getting a biking companion for the remainder of the trip. We eventually decided that this plan was impractical, but it was still fun to play with the puppies.
