For the past two days we have been lounging around the hostel and catching up on sleep. Being able to sleep in and take naps has been pretty nice! While lounging around with Marquise and Denzel, the topic of soul food came up. The boys were shocked that we had never had real soul food, we didn't even know what, exactly, it was. So they gave a quick run down of what would be included in a soul food meal: fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn bread, macaroni and cheese, and greens. They told us about a good place to eat soul food, but we decided to take advantage of the kitchen and prepared a home cooked meal. Marquise told us that he was a pro at cookin' up some fried chicken, so we put him in charge of that while we prepared the corn bread and potatoes. All was going smoothly until... FIRE! As Marquise was taking the last piece of chicken out of the frying pan a tiny drop of grease splashed onto the burner. Before anyone could react the whole burner, frying pan and pot of potatoes lit up. Amanda froze, Erika scrambled back and forth between the stove and sink and Marquise picked up the flaming pan and held it in shock. Thankfully, Evie, one of the hostel staff, had enough composure to get a container of flour and put the fire out by dousing the stove. It put out the fire, but created enough smoke to set off the fire alarm and produced a horrible smell. Luckily no one got hurt and the chicken was saved, so we laughed for a while, then ate a delicous meal.

While staying at the hostel we have met lots of interesting people. One of the guys we met, Al, invited us out with his friends one night. They took us around to four different bars and we got to see Memphis in a whole different way. Al, Lindsey, Shannon, and Ben were all a lot of fun.

Today we stopped by a bike shop, Outdoors Inc., that had been recomended to us by a couple different people. We asked the bike mechanic, Graham, if he would pump up our tires and check our gears before we headed out in the morning. We started talking about our trip and he told us that he wants to do a similar trip one day. After he finished looking our bikes over he told us about a bike polo game that was happening later that evening and invited us to come. The weather went from beautiful to tornado warnings in about 10 minutes. Graham got a hold of the Pilgrim House to let us know that the game was canceled, but invited us to meet him and a friend at The Deli once the weather cleared. We talked about biking, quoted movies, and had a great time! Jason and Graham offered us advice about our route and things to see along the way. It was a good end to our stay in Memphis.
