After a tiring bus journey I arrived in Sandakan.  Not much here but breaks up the journey to Kinabalu park.  Booked into the local hostel, bought some food for the mountain climb and went to find something to eat.  Decided to be adventurous and try my luck at the night market but ended up with chicken bones on a stick (again i couldn't find any meat on the chicken kebab) but at least had some minced sweetcorn which was OK.  Still hungry I went to try a cafe mentioned in my guidebook but being a westerner I got given some strange version of honey chicken - a cold fried chicken drumstick covered in red sweet sauce with cold rice?  Oh well, bring on Thai cuisine (or maybe I should spend more on food?).

Back at the hostel I discovered I'd been eaten alive by mosquitoes and woke up at midnight excruitiatingly itchy - so bad that I was panicking and almost couldn't breathe!  I'd taken 2 types iof antihistamines and used a ton of cream but they'd swollen up something chronic.  The girls in reception couldn't believe they were mosquito bites as they'd never seen anything like it and asked if i wanted to go to hospital to get something stronger since I couldn't sleep and couldn't stop itching.  Luckily all the drugs eventually knocked me out and I ended up having to miss the bus I'd booked and paid for do I could go to the pharmacy where I got something even stronger so fingers crossed no more bites!  Bought another bus ticket and heading to the national park.
