The boat job's been going well and I really enjoy it, although it's tricky doing my job when the sea is rough! The crew are great, we go out to some nice sites, but it's a long day and hard work
So, during the past month I went on a fishing trip up the local Estuary with my housemates and my mate Emma. We hired a little pontoon and fishing gear, took some snacks and headed off into snadfly and crocodile infested waters to see what we could catch. I caught a mudcrab and Alan decided to try and get it off the line which was a huge mistake as they are viscious little creatures! First it fell onto my leg and scratched me then clawed and cut Alan's fingers - he was lucky he didn't lose them completely! Needless to say we admitted defeat and threw him back in the river. Additionally I decided to have a go at driving the boat and unfortunately we were hit by a wave from another boat which caused water to come in and the front of the pontoon started tipping rapidly.....into crocodile infested waters......in a flash everyone got to the back of the boat and we stopped the engine and managed to reclaim the situation and all members on board survived.
Spent a lot of time in local bars for happy hour - one bar has a daily feeding of a local Groper fish (George) but he was somewhat shy on the day we went. Also caught up with some friends I met elsewhere - Emma, Claire and Jo. They are now working here for a while so that's good for my social life (but not good for my bank balance!). Tom Hanks was in also town too for a few days and my housemate was exctatic that she got to serve him breakfast at the cafe she works at.
Managed to go out on the boat as a guest with Alan and went scuba diving which was cool
My housemate took myself and Alan up to Cape Tribulation for the day which was nice. We did lots of touristy things on the way including breakfast at High Falls Farm (tropical fruit farm), went to look at an outdoor theatre (Karnak playhouse), watched some buff guys making vases and things from moulten glass, went to a cool insect museum, had homemade ice-cream (Daintree ice-cream company), had crappy coffee (Dragonfly Cafe), checked out Cape Tribulation beach and were lucky to spot the rare and dangerous Cassowary bird just at the edge of the bush - amazing!
Alan left town early this morning to meet a friend and travel the West Coast so last night we had a huge send-off for him involving copious amounts of alcohol and silly dancing. Not sure how much we drank but I'm pretty tired today - still don't really get hangovers guys!
As for all the cool pics of where I live you'll have to check out my facebook albums at the mo as this site takes too long and I want to get out of this internet cafe soon as it eats my hard earned cash!
