I got an early bus from Lima to Huaraz and paid a bit more to go 1st class which meant I had a nice reclining chair and is the closest I'll get to flying business! We had 3 movies on the bus - el hijo de la mascara (the son of the mask) which was in Spanish but looked bad anyway, the Chronicles of Narnia which was rubbish then Master and Commander with Russell Crow which was seriously dull. On the plus side I had plenty of time to read my spanish book and listen to my lessons on my MP3 player. We also had a game of bingo which was great for trying to learn Spanish numbers and I was only 2 numbers from winning my ticket back to Lima which would have saved me some money but nevermind!
I arrived at the hostel (http://www.churup.com) in Huaraz (at an altide of 3000m) in the evening and the guy at reception spoke to English so entirely in Spanish I explained that I'd had an e-mail to confirm my reservation for 2 nights in a dorm - he seemed to understand as he gave me a bed (although the wrong key) and the kid in me again chose a top bunk (so I could sleep high :)). There were a couple of guys in my room who were stocked full of kit and had just got back from some trekking trip in the mountains. They were from the USA and seemed to know their stuff. Chatted to some people in the hostel as there´s a sitting room with DVD player and then chilled out upstairs in the restaurant and drank some really cheap wine (well it was going free) with a girl and a guy. There is a young brother and sister travelling for 3 months here from the UK - she had just finished uni and he´s about to start. They must get on really well to travel together?
