So last week was pretty chill. We continued stuffing our faces with pastries, and we went into town on Wednesday to see Harry Potter. Luckily, the movie was in English with Spanish subtitles. Most of the class went, and it was a real treat becuase we ate at the mall food court before the movie, and they had all sorts of American fast foods. I personally enjoyed a delicious, long-awaited big mack.
The volunteering hasnīt really improved much. Lauren still goes to her clinic everyday and doesnīt do much, but she did get to watch a cavity be filled on Thursday. I went out with the town doctor again to hand out information about swine flu. Itīs fun to see how the whole neighborhood knows the doctor so well. Itīs also quite funny that a lot of the people wonīt answer the door when they see that itīs a white person becuase they think weīre all Mormons trying to convert them.
This Tuesday, thereīs going to be a big health outreach campaign at the the local public clinic, and we all get to help out, so that should be fun. The classes are continuing on as well, and we can now say words like Falopian tube and spleen in Spanish.
However, we skipped class on Friday to catch an early bus to the beach. Thankfully, that bus not only lacked possessed children, but it even had air conditioning. FANTASTIC!!
So, we got the beach, had some Italian food for dinner, and went to bed early. The next day, we met up with Robbie (a friend from Yale who happens to be from Kentucky) and his family and made some plans for the day. Then, Lauren and I took surf lessons........thatīs right.......AMANDA RODE A SURF BOARD! Well actually, "rode" might not be the correct word. Lauren was quite talented in the surfing world whereas I was perfectly happy just lying on the board and floating into the beach. Why stand up when I probably would have fell off anyway? Nevertheless, I did get up twice and Lauren got up a lot more, but we both had a wipe out or two. It was a ton of fun, and the surf school gave us free tank tops from their 4th of July surfing competition.
So after we had both been thourouhgly beat up by the waves, we went and had lunch with Robbie and his family, then we took advantage of their rental car and went to a local ecological reserve where they housed rescued animals. We saw corocodiles, anteaters, parrots, peccaries, cute jaguar like things, and crazy colored squirrels. It was great fun.
Afterwards, we went back to Robbieīs hotel and mooched off of their swimming pool. It was especially lovely since the place we were staying was legitimatly the worst place Iīve ever seen! There were huge cockraoches in the shower, and the paint was peeling off the walls, and the beds were super sketchy......but it was cheap and close to the beach.
This morning, we had an early beach walk before having breakfast with Robbie and heading back to our Costa Rican home......weīre super excited for pastry time.
