We left Clinton this morning at about 8am and set out on our way toward Pennsylvania. Amanda drove the 6 hour trip from MA to PA, without any major mishaps. We made one quick pit-stop at a Burger King somewhere in Jersey.
We arrived in Harrisburg, PA at about 3:30pm. The weather was a bit doomy and gloomy so we decided to scrap the outdoor plans and try something indoors. Thanks to the trusty GPS, we found a cool local attraction: Indian Echo Caverns in Hershey, PA (www.indianechocaverns.com).
The place was pretty cool. We got to tour a 500 million yr. old cave (about 100ft under ground). Our tour guide was nice, and we were with another family. The cavern was really interesting (and a little creepy), it had all kinds of markings and messages from Native American and American settlers. We also heard the story of the Hermit of Pennsylvania, a man who lived in the cave for 20 years. The highlight for Sarah, was the two goats, Wanda and Suzanne, who were living near the cave entrance. We spent a little time schmoozing with and feeding them. They were entertaining and hungry, one even tried to eat Amanda's sweater. We even got a little exercise climbing up the 71 steep, crooked, concrete stairs that lead up from the cave entrance (phew).
We then made our way to the quaint (and by quaint we mean desolate) West Hanover Township where we settled into a Howard Johnson's. At first we were concerned because we were clearly the only ones at the hotel (possibly in the whole town) other than the manager. However, this is no longer the case. There are other guests, including an incessant sneezer (allergy season?).
We ate dinner at the Soda Jerk Diner in Hummelstown, and decided to settle in for the night. Check out the pictures from the day, feel free to post comments or send emails and stay tuned for updates on day two!
