The one with the night in the hospital

I'll be the first to admit I've been out of blogging-touch for a little bit too long. I've left my worthy admirers (because I know there are so many of you...) out to dry without the slightest update since before my mom came. But I should just say my out-of-touch-ness is completely justified...or at least partly... So my mom arrived the Thursday after my last blog, I think. And with her came my new computer (YAY), which is glorious, wonderous, shiny, and new. Its absolutely wonderful...now if I only had wireless in my house I would never have to bring it outside again and risk it being stolen like the first one... Anyway, I met mom Thursday night for dinner at Cabaña Las Lilas, the restaurant where I had my birthday dinner and I'm just about obsessed with because it's really good even if it's definitely touristy. Her friend Michelle also came to Buenos Aires so she would have someone to travel around with, although in the end I made plans to go with them, as well. So we all met up and had a great dinner. After that I left them at the hotel and met up with friends. The next day, after a lovely 4 hours of sleep I woke up to join them on a tour of the city with their guide Marta, who did not stop talking for 3 hours. Friday night we went to a tango show at the Faena Hotel in Puerto Madero. The hotel was sooooooo cool. The decorating, I mean. It was all modern in parts, and kind of dark. They have two restaurants: one is kind of like a cavernous, den, cave-like homey-feeling place and the other is completely white with huge unicorn heads on the wall and it seems all fluffy and airy because its just so white. There was a huge bar that was decorated like a giant library with big leather chairs and dark stained walls. From the doors leading outside from the bar is a pool and porch with great tables set up. The pool is also really cool. Its right near the entrance to the hotel so you can sort of see it coming in and it's a bit raised out of the ground and the water falls over the edges. The tango show included dinner beforehand but we had been advised the food wasn't as good there so we ate at one of the hotel restaurants and joined everyone for the show after dinner. The show was scheduled to start at 10pm, but, of course, didn't get going until after 10:30. Once it did get started though it was really, really cool. After the show I once again left mom and Mimi at the hotel and joined friends for someone's birthday. Everything was going fabulously until I got a call from Mimi around 2 saying my mom was on the way to the hospital. She said she's broken her wrist, however I heard ribs and started freaking out. One, because breaking your ribs isn't a fun thing to do, and two, breaking anything in Argentina and needing to go to the hospital is definitely not something you ever want to plan on doing. I dragged my friend Harper along with me because I was a mess. We hoped in a cab thinking we were going to meet them at one hospital only to receive a call half way there saying we should go to a different hospital. Once we got to the second hospital we waited for about 20 min before we got another call telling us to go to the first hospital. It was a complete mess and only added to my anxiety. Finally I was reunited with my mom and we spent the rest of the night in the hospital because everything they did was incredibly slow and the place was completely empty. While my mom went to get x-rays they left Mimi, Harper, and me in the examination room completely alone the whole time. Naturally Harper and I got extremely bored and since we wanted some ice for my mom we thought we'd try to find it ourselves. Unfortunately we didn't find any ice, but there was lots of other fun stuff to play with. Once we realized Mom was going to be ok everything was much more fun after that and the hospital fiasco ended up being one of my most fun, interesting nights in the city so far. We finally got back to the room around 6:30am. Being ravenously hungry Harper and I ordered a room service feast, gorged ourselves on food and promptly fell asleep watching a dvd. The next day Mom went to another doctor the travel guide recommended, he was a colleague of her husband, where she had her cast changed (which had first been put on by a med student. It was from her shoulder down to her fingers and weighed 40 trillion pounds). There she found out she'd need to go home for surgery, so she and Michelle made plans to leave that night. Since I was planning to travel with them all the following week and had already told Flacso I wouldn't be going on their planned trip, Mom suggested that I fly home when everyone left for the Flacso trips. In the end I flew home with them Saturday night....
