Yesterday I joined a gym here, or series of gyms throughout the city, which is convenient because my classes are located near some of the others. The one near me has everything I'd be interested in using, even an erg, which I was nervous they might not have, and I can take classes. Its all very standard, like any gym you'd join in the US. Just the people are a bit unlike what you might expect. Almost every woman who was working out had a "profesor" (i.e trainer) with them, even while they walked on the treadmill. No one runs on them, apparently only walking is in. Hardly anyone breaks a sweat, and everyone was wearing long pants and a long sleeved shirts (except all the Americans). If not a long sleeved shirt, then a jacket which could conspicuously be taken off to reveal just a sports bra and waist high pants. Very posh. I definitely broke a taboo by wearing my spandex shorts. Someone was even drinking a bottle of coke while on the treadmill. And there's a 20 min limit to all the machines. That's just not going to work because one of my favorite things to do when I go to the gym is sit on the bike for an hour while I read. It's the only time I don't get hideously bored when I work out for long stretches of time.

My birthday is coming up pretty soon, and I've been gone almost 3 weeks. This means homesickness has set in.

In an attempt to fend off longing for the US, Sarah and I went to the movies yesterday. Ahora son 13 (i.e. Ocean's 13) served as the perfect antidote, especially since it was in English with Spanish subtitles. Seeing starbucks on screen was almost like being there...(sort of). That aside though, I really wish I were on Martha's Vineyard right now, not only because its summer there, but its just what I've come to think of as routine procedure for August. There are things I need to do out there like have Suellan drag me out of bed before sunrise to drive to the Edgartown lighthouse to watch sunrise while we eat gigantic apple fritters and drink iced chais or boogie board on LV beach with Boo and the Conroys while snickering at Jim Belushi. Or I dunno Mad Martha's or lunch at the Lookout. I would go to Cronigs and wait in long supermarket lines with mom if it meant being on the vineyard. I'd even consider letting mom have the Vineyard Sound serenade her again. More precisely what is my birthday without dinner at Lola's where the creepy, old owner comes out with a huge cake with a sparkler on top and the crazy hat you get to wear while everyone sings? It's just standard, besides the coconut shrimp are amazing!

Other than that, I learned the other day that I have to buy my own toilet paper, because heaven forbid (!) I might have to really go but am out of paper in my bathroom and rather, than running to the store I just might have decided to take a roll from the cabinet. Apparently Susana counts her toilet paper rolls and I owed her one. So I went out and bought really soft, big, double rolls and put my-better-and-bigger roll back on the shelf. Ha.

I had my first classes this week. So far all is good. I'm just choosing between a few that have similar topics. choosing is done mostly through my ability to understand different professors and which courses will involve the least amount of reading (in Spanish).

Ciao
