Boy, did we need coffee & lots of it this morning! We got away from Walmart at about 9am and hit the road, driving through Portland OR. Portland city runs along a river and has some amazing bridges that cross it. It looks like an older style American city with lots of fall trees between the sky scrapers. We are driving through rain again, two days in a row, so hopefully we may see some sun again soon! On our long journey today I have been looking at some of our photos taken earlier on our trip - I can't believe how fast time has flown since we've been here. It seems like only yesterday that we were wandering around Times Square in NYC at 2am! Fred says we have travelled over 10,200 miles (16,000 km) so far...! We stopped for lunch at a roadside diner called 'Dixie's Café' just outside of Veneta, Oregon and had a really yummy lunch there, including a slice of strawberry & rhubarb pie a la mode (which both kids helped me polish off). We really like these sorts of places, as the bottomless cups of coffee truly are -you never see the bottom of the cup as the waitresses are always topping it up Leaves, leaves everywhere... at reststop

! The rain has lifted and we have been driving through one of the most scenic forests we've encountered - not like New Zealand forest (ie. Endless green pine trees), but a multicolour festival of trees and rivers (I'm sure in spring & summer the trees here don't look nearly so nice, but in Fall, WOW!). Stopping at a rest area on the Oregon coast, we were treated to our first view of the Pacific Ocean since we flew over it to California. While there, Fred discovered some blackberry brambles over the fence, so he couldn't resist the temptation to try some. However as he was nibbling he looked down to see a 2 foot long black & yellow snake slithering about a metre in front of him... totally wrecked his appetite and he quickly abandoned his berry picking! Staying tonight at a tiny RV park in Port Orford (the oldest west coast town in Oregon).
