Well I was standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona

Such a fine sight to see

There's a girl my Lord, in a flatbed Ford

Slowin' down to take a look at me....

- The Eagles.

This morning we all rolled out of bed early - before 7 for me, a minor miracle! We headed over to the outdoor picnic tables in the camground and got a $1.99 all-you-can eat pancake breakfast (Kate got some scrambled eggs as she reckons she doesn't like pancakes...) and all we could eat were the two huge pancakes! On the picnic table was a jar of syrup and a jar of liquid butter..?? Still, they were pretty nice pancakes. Again though, no one spoke to us at the other tables, which was really disappointing.

After breakfast we hopped in the truck and headed into downtown Holbrook. We went to the old courthouse, built in 1898, which is now a museum/visitors centre. There were the remains of old jail cells which you could walk through, complete with some amazing artistic jailhouse art on the walls. I think we have put the kids of a life of crime by taking them through here...! The rest of the museum had relics from the good ol' days, and it was nice to find a little museum that was free! Then we drove down to a part of Route 66 that went through town and spotted the kitschy famous 'Wig Wam Motel', complete with classic cars parked outside. Then back to the campground to hitch on the 5th wheel and off back on Interstate 40 (which has taken over from Route 66). Our next stop was Winslow, Arizona - mentioned in the famous 70's Eagles song 'Takin' it easy', one of our family favourites. A dusty old style town, another relic from the Route 66 heyday. And yes, we had to stop at the corner with the hitchhiker statue, complete with mural of girl in a flatbed Ford behind him, and of course a real red flatbed Ford parked by the corner. Then on down I40, through dry dusty flat land to Flagstaff, Arizona where we had lunch at a mediocre diner.

Next stop was the Grand Canyon Deer Farm http://www.deerfarm.com/ about 8 miles out of Williams (where we are staying for our visit to the Grand Canyon). The deer are in a big fenced area and they are very tame. Once they had spotted that we had food, they were all over us like a rash. They greedily gobbled food out of our hands, and even nibbled on our clothes. I assume they were looking for food & not to see if we were edible! Kate got a bit upset when one of them had a chew on her skirt, but she did like looking at the other animals - like llamas, reindeer, goats, pot bellied pig, two bored looking bison & a camel. The kids were fascinated by a cockatoo who spoke very clearly and charmingly - it was entertaining watching him bounce up and down and bark like a dog! It didn't take long to get to our campground in Williams http://www.koa.com/where/az/03109/

We are staying at a KOA which suffered a bad fire last year (it took out their office, laundry, pool, playground & sewage system) so they are offering a discounted price to stay here (they still have power, water & wi-fi). We wanted to stay in the National Park itself, but they were booked up this weekend, so Williams was the closest town that had a RV park - a 45 minute drive to the Canyon.
