This morning we drove the 40 minutes up to Boulder. Boulder is known as a college town, as it has a couple of universities in it. We tried to find the Boulder Falls (a 70 foot waterfall) but after driving around for 30 minutes and still not finding it we gave up. We parked near Pearl St Mall, which is the main boutique shopping centre in Boulder. We found a yummy store called 'The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory' and we were like kids in a candy store - our kids were definitely like kids in a candy store! There was chocolate of every sort: fudge, hard candy, toffee apples etc - I can hear you all drooling from here. We limited ourselves to one treat each, and headed outside to sit under the shade of the trees in the mall to eat them. We found Boulder to be a very pretty place, especially with the rocky outcrops that sit behind the city. Later for lunch we went to IHOP (International house of pancakes). Afterwards we drove into Denver to the Hammond's Candy Factory http://www.hammondscandies.com/
We went on a free tour and got to see how they hand-make all their candy products, which was really interesting and the kids enjoyed watching too! The make mainly hard candy - like lollypops (the biggest one is a 5 pound lollypop for $50) and candy-canes etc, but they also make caramels, marshmallows & chocolate. We saw them making the start of Candy canes, unfortunately we got hurried along just as it was getting to the good part of stretching the candy. We stocked up on lots of candy too - especially the 'oops' section which sells broken candy cheaply!
