Yep, Kansas is definitely corn country, though we did see a lot of prairie grass type stuff too, and some other plants growing that we found out later were called 'Milo'. After a while seeing a cow was cause for excitement, just to see something different. We played a scavenger hunt type card game in the car with the kids (spot a red car, blue house, motorbike, tow truck, a licence plate with a 'y' in it, etc) but a bit tricky on the Kansas Interstate when there is a limited amount of things to see! We stopped at a rest area & grabbed some sandwiches in the 5th wheel, before hitting the road again. We have 300 miles to cover today!
Parked up at the Goodland KOA, and then headed off to the corn maze, www.colefamilyfarms.com
We were the first people to use the maze this season (they had only opened it today) and the owner was amazed that we were from New Zealand. She must have been extremely amazed, as we had only been in the corn for 15 minutes or so when we ran into another couple who immediately hailed us - "Are you the family from New Zealand?". We told her we were - turns out she was from the local paper! So she followed us around for a bit, asking questions about our trip and taking some photos Goodland Sign

. She said she will send us a copy of the paper the story appears in. Hopefully there will be some good publicity for the Cole Family who own & run the maze. We had a really nice chat with them when we were done and they even gave us a little pumpkin as they had lots of pumpkins around - people will start buying them soon for Halloween. The corn maze was fun, but a lot harder than we thought. Luckily we had some clue directions that helped us out, even though sometimes they put us wrong!

We really liked Kansas. The people we've met here are friendly & helpful, and yay - they understand our accents! I know a lot of people make fun of Kansas because of the endless rural spaces, but there is something so soothing just driving along. It's miles of straight roads, seeing the corn & grass waving in the wind and watching that endless vista of blue, blue sky arcing up over the plains.
