8.30am and we're on the road, and the temperature is 30 degrees! A beautiful blue sky with only a few fluffy white clouds scattered around. It's gonna be a hot one - and gee, we feel so bad for our friends and family in cold old New Zealand...!
We had a looooong drive today, with lots of cris-crossing spaghetti junctions, but we didn't get lost! The toll roads on this part of Florida (the Florida Turnpike) are just unbelievable - we were paying $3 a pop, with a toll booth seemingly every 10 miles - in the end we must have paid about $18 in tolls!
We arrived at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef park campground on Key Largo at about 5pm. Fred set up camp while I took the kids to the swimming beach, they were hanging out to try their new snorkel sets. The swimming beach was pretty yuck (not what I had been expecting) with a very rocky shore, murky water, seaweed everywhere and a sulphur smell. I decided not to swim and instead watched the kids VERY quickly learn to snorkel - Kate took to it like the proverbial duck to water. We didn't stay too long at that beach before returning back to the 5th wheel. Later we went for a walk and looked over the edges of the marina, hoping to see a manatee - no such luck. We did see lots of little geckos/lizards though.
