Off to do the mundane task of laundry and the laundrymat today, but it ended up being fun. We took the subway down to 28th street (well, that's where we intended to go, but the train had other plans and didn't stop until 8th street!) so we hopped on another train going the other way and finally made it to the right stop.

Embarrassing for me at the laundrymat - couldn't figure out how to insert quarters into the soap powder machines - woman was probably thinking "tourists!!" So after our washing was on we walked a couple of blocks over to Madison Square park, where Josh & Kate had fun at the playground there, while Fred admired the Flatiron building (first skyscraper in NY I think) and I stalked squirrels... he he.

We caught the subway down to City Hall so we could walk across the famous Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge was awesome - not just because of its history but it just looks fantastic and to be able to walk across it was really neat. Walking above all the cars was a bit spooky but still cool. We could see the Statue of Liberty from it, also we could see the trains running under the cars on the next-over Manhattan Bridge.

We took heaps of photos on the bridge, along with all the other tourists. Seems like 90% of the people using the bridge were tourists!

So we decided to catch the subway to Coney Island. I found a police officer who told us it was a 5 minute walk to the station, and gave directions. She was wrong, very wrong. The directions were wrong and so was the time it would take. After 15 minutes of walking in the heat, we eventually got to the station and found our platform to go on to Coney Island. The trip to the island was quite long, longer than we were used to going. Anyway we got to Coney Island, and firstly walked about checking things out. Our first ride was on the famous Coney Island Wonder Wheel (ferris wheel), which went up pretty high.

After that Josh decided that he wanted to go on the Cyclone rollercoaster. The guy in the ticket office said he was tall enough, but after making our way to the actual ride the guy there said he wasn't. Josh was pretty devastated about it but kept a brave face.
So we told him he could pick any other ride. So he decided on the Pirate ship but again too short. Then he picked another ride and was too short again. So then he picked another ride and was too tall! But they both were ok for the log ride, so Fred took them on that and they had a blast.

They then went on a couple of "kiddy" rides but then it started raining...very heavily. We all got drenched running out of the amusement park, and decided to find a restaurant we could sit down at and dry off. But of course everyone else had the same idea so the restaurants were all full to the point of people hanging right outside, trying to stay away from the downpour. So plans changed we thought we would just go back to Manhattan on the train and have dinner in the hotel. But we had to get across the flooded road to the train station. Again we got dumped on with rain. A 40-minute ride later we were back in Manhattan and sitting down for food at 8.30pm, at Lindy's Diner (quite a famous diner in NY).

So once again we are all exhausted from walking....but loving it all the same.
