I know the title doesn't sound like a travelogue entry, but then going to Israel is for me always a mix of travel and personal history. I lived in this Tel Aviv apartment a few years back and it is always a good point from which to settle back into Tel Aviv. First I meet my family here, especially my brother and his wife and my grandmother. The next day, I start riding my old, rediscovered bike around town. Ritualistically going to a few points that I like to wander around. The Tel Aviv beach--thank god for it. Soft and Mediterranean, yet it is still a sea-wild and even dangerous.  The friendliness, directness and laid backness of the "natives" soon begins to take effect. Everything is familiar yet also viewed afresh. In order to settle back in I like to frequent some regular hangouts for food and otherwise. Usually the trip would begin with my grandmother's fantastic Jewish cooking but as she is now 91 and barely walks she doesn't cook much any more. Instead my sister in law brings over some delicious Israeli Deli style food. As I am a pretty food oriented person I am going to tell a lot about what I eat. So she brings over some bourekas (baked filo stuffed with cheese) and Hummus and cold cuts and chesses and cakes. The next day my first food stop is at a Hummus place called Hummus Asli which has good Hummus with Fuul (fava beans) and an egg. Just in case anyone here might be visiting Israel, I am going to tell you where it is: on Dizingoff around Yirmiyahu street.
