We arrived in Kamphaeng Phet at sunset and we made the decision to walk across the bridge into town instead of paying a taxi. We tried here, as in many places, to convince the drivers that, yes, we have been on a bus for 6 hours and walking is good for us, thanks but no thanks! They always look at us in disbelief. It's like no one walks in Thailand! It seemed like a good idea at first, but as we got into the town we realized that with no map finding a guesthouse was going to be difficult. But wait! A small car suddenly pulled beside us with two people asking us if we needed help. There was a nice Thai woman and a white man in the car and they offered us a ride to a guesthouse. I gave Alon a look to see if he felt okay about this and he reassured me that he had a good feeling about these helpers so yeah, let's get in the strangers' car! As we got on our way with Jackie and Thor they asked what we were doing in town. This told us that probably not a lot of backpackers bother to stop here. Kamphaeng interested us because of its Thai ruins. Many foreign visitors head to a bigger sight in Thailand called Ayuthaya which boasts its historic temples but we thought this smaller sight would be just as pleasing. Then, Thor and Jackie asked if we'd like to crash at their house? We looked at each other to make sure that we agreed it would be okay, then conceded. Not something that we would normally do, but the feeling we got from the couple was positive, no weird vibe at all. Turned out to be a nice couple of days with the couple and their three kids, quite the lively house. We got to see what it was like to "live" in Thailand. We went to church for a Christmas service, and visited the local ruins and shared a couple of home cooked meals and good conversation with our new friends. Soon, it was time to head north. We were thankful for the generosity that we found in this off the beaten track town in Thailand and will look back fondly at the short time spent with our unexpected friends.
