Carnival officially ended Wednesday The city is still partying, but it has died down quite a bit. The past couple of days has seen us going to be a bit earlier - around 1AM and sleeping in late (today was 11:30AM). We just can't seem to wake up any earlier. I have permanent bags under my eyes (kidney energy deficiency as my qi gong master would say from not sleeping at night). Even Jim is sleeping late which he never does back home. Oh well, eventually we'll get back on track.

Other than catching up on sleep, Jim's been working quite a bit trying to get the software development back on track.  He even worked until 6am because he had so much on his mind. He's so close to releasing it, but still there is more work to be done. I have been hanging out with Dalia every day. Yesterday we went to listen to some Brazilian jazz and meet her friend Roxanne, a firery red head with lots of energy. She was very excited to meet me and I've become her new best friend. She is eager to show me around the city and practice her English. Jim was suppose to go with us but stubbed his toe so badly on the bathroom door that he couldn't join us. It was black and blue and we don't know if he broke it or not.

Today, Dalia took us on the metro downtown. I was suprised to see such a modern metro system. It's pretty new and they are building more tunnels to other areas in south Rio. Downtown ws bustling. Dalia took us to a samba dance hall where people would leave work to go dance samba from 12pm-2pm and then return to work. What a culture! Then the dance hall opens up again for evening dancing. Young and old, black and white, rich and poor all get together to dance samba. It was electric and intoxicating. They were wonderful dancers and I was hooked. I danced a few dances. One guy was very pacient with me and the other was not so much. I'm not much of a couples dancer and not speaking Portuguese didn't help. I sat by Jim most of the time and observed, but I want to learn. Ater everyone left I asked Dalia to find Jim and I a teacher to teach us samba. We were introduced to Cesar, Claudio and Cida. Cida was a beautiful black woman from London. Her mother is Brazilian and her father is Jamaican. She was so beautiful with dark glowing skin, and a beautiful smile. She had taken a sebatical from work in London to come to Brazil and study Portuguese, history and some other topics I can't remember. She is hoping to find work here. She was also a student of Cesar. She was an amazing dancer and has only been studying a month which gives me great hope. Cesar said he would give us some private lessons then move us to the group classes. We will start next week as well as start our Portuguese language classes in Copacabana. We all walked around downtown together getting to know each other and exchanging contact information. I've met more people here in 1 week than I have in 6 months in Hawaii. This place is so friendly and there is so much to do. We ate at a healthy place for lunch and guess what? We ran into Roxanne. She was so happy to meet us and meet Jim for the first time.

Dalia has made us a great offer. She has a 3 bedroom apartment she will rent to us for a good price. The money we give her will go toward fixing up the floors and buying furniture for the apartment so that she can start renting it out. It's a win/win situation. It's in Copacabana a few blocks from where we are now and very close to Ipanema. It just needs a little work which we are happy to help, and I get to feng shui the place :-)
