We left our beautiful beach and headed toward Blenheim making a quick pit stop in Kaikoura. While we were driving up just north of Kaikoura we saw something standing in the middle of the single lane highway. As my eyes adjusted we both simultaneously shouted "Penguin!". There it was, a single penguin standing in the middle of the highway on the double yellow line with cars quickly passing both ways. What was it doing on the highway? Obviously, it was trying to cross. I was so scared for it. I hoped it would be ok and we asked our angels to protect it.
It started to pour buckets of rain. We made a quick stop in Blenheim. It was still raining and we were glad. If it was sunny it would of been harder to say no to going wine tasting. Our bodies can't process the sugars in the wine. So there we were, in Marlbourough, where the best Souvignon Blanc in the world is produced and we couldn't drink it. The choices we make and the things we do for our bodies. Jeez!
We decided to not stay in Blenheim and leave the South Island for the North Island. We made last minute ferry reservations and rushed to Picton to catch the last ferry of the day. It was a nice 3 hour ferry ride to Wellington as we sailed through Marlborough Sound. We read to each other most of the way there.
Once we arrived we caught a quick bite to eat and chose to free camp, so Jim drove up a huge hill in the city and parked in the nicest area of town partly on the street and partly on the sidewalk to get level. Here we are with a beautiful view of Wellingtons downtown lights. It's been a long travel day.
