Where I stayed
Well our trip started off with a delay before we even got out of Cairns! We were held up for about 30 mins and then we were off to Sydney. After spending about 8-9 hours trying to stay awake and entertain ourselves, we were off to Honolulu, Hawaii! Until the plane was delayed for another hour before take off.... After another 7.5 hours and trying to get some sleep we landed in Honolulu, Hawaii. I had a few snickers at the first few American accents we heard with Jason giving me funny looks. After being grilled by the immigration lady about why we wanted to be in the States for so long we were set free! Funny enough.. we left Cairns at 6am Tuesday 16th of September and we arrived in Honolulu at around 9am Tuesday 16th of September. So I don't know if you want to call it our 2nd or really long first day in Honolulu as it was the same day. Crazy talk!
We caught the local bus service 'The Bus' for $2 you can go all over the island which is pretty good
A few things we have discovered about Honolulu, Hawaii:
- There are 'ABC Stores' located at almost every corner it seems. Apparently there are 50 over Hawaii state. They sell everything from clothes, groceries, soverneirs and of course alcohol.
- We have to get used to walking on the right side of the footpath, rather then automatically staying to the left!
- Getting used to tax not being added in items until you get the bill/checkout. And tipping!
- That a Dime (10 cents) is smaller then 5 cents, and for some strange reason can't get my head around it yet.
- That when you cross the street, it doesn't make that beeping sound that means you can walk which you strangely don't take much notice of until it isn't there no more!
We got up after a decent sleep and had a nice breakfast around the corner of bacon, eggs and pancakes with maple syrup.. MMMMmm. Then we caught 'The Bus' to Diamond Head Monument Park. Diamond head is a crater that is left of a volcano some 300,000 years ago = 1.3 kilometre hike up the side of the damn thing with lots of steps and slopes and rocks n stuff. Was worth it once we got up the top.. nice thing about the Red Arrow in Cairns is that it's not in the full on sun unlike this. Beautiful view up the top.. and then we came down and had a Rainbow Shaved Ice. So yummy! Then we caught the bus back into Waikiki got a few things for lunch and dinner then came back to the hostel to chill. This was not complete without a bottle of Mike's Hard Lemonade.
Later that night one of the hostel staff was having his birthday and invited everyone next door to have some drinks. So off we went to a bar next door called Tapas.. little did we know this was a gay bar! Our first night out in America.. and we ended up in a gay bar! Pretty hilarious but it was a really good night. The place had a pool table complete with Karoke of course. Johnny the hostel manager was there singing his heart out.
Today we were going to hire bikes but I wanted to see North Shore and I knew there was no way in hell that I was going to be able to ride half the Island (2 hours on a bus to get there mind you). So off we went to catch the local bus. All was good until half way there the bus pulled over to the side and stopped. Apparently they forgot to put oil in the bus! So here we were in the middle of nowhere waiting for another bus. Doesn't seem that funny except the day before a guy from the hostel we met called Dan told us about how he caught the bus and it pulled over at a fast food place called 'Jack in the Box' and the bus driver got out and got some food then got back on. He had joked with us in the morning our 4 hour round trip might end up 5 hours if the bus driver looks hungry.
Eventually we got to North Shore and the waves were pretty tame at this time of the year. There was a few surfers and Jason had a quick swim. The sand is so soft here and hard to walk in! Jason was sick of hearing me whinge of sore legs :P
We got back to the hostel had a shower then went to check out the Cheesecake factory which we had heard was good. When we got there the line was way out the door, but after already spending lots of time waiting, I was going to have dinner here
