Day 14: Bozeman, Montana to Jackson, Wyoming

States covered: Montana, Wyoming
Miles covered: Approx. 280
Weather: Sunny, mild and beautiful (we don't miss the humidity)
Abby meltdowns: Just 1 as we took too long to get to our hotel at night.
Highlights: Yellowstone and the Tetons at sunset, need we say more.
National Park Stamps: Yellowstone
Stay Over: Spring Creek Ranch, Jackson, Wyoming
Phrase of the Day: "Watch for wildlife on roadway next 51 miles" Road sign in Livingston, MT before entering Yellowstone.

Trivia Question: You all know Old Faithful, but what percentage of the world's hydrothermal features does Yellowstone contain?

Well, we made little, if any, progress east today. But our meandering was worth it -- you probably know what is between Bozeman and Jackson:

Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks! What cross country family trip would be complete without a stop in Yellowstone? Plus, as unbelievable as it may seem, even though he has over 100 stamps from National Park sites, until today, Paul had not been to Yellowstone. Yes there were crowds and traffic, etc. (it was a Saturday in August after all), but even the hordes of tourists cannot detract from the many wonders of Yellowstone. (The world's first national park.) The weather was beautiful, the wildlife wonderful and the scenery superb.

Soon after our entrance into the Park through the famed Roosevelt Gate we saw several very large Elks up cose and personal, we also saw several other elk, a coyote, some bison and the wildlife sighting of the day...a mother grizzly and her 4 cubs. Paul got very close. Park employees were even taking pictures and they said it wasn't often the mother was seen with all 4 cubs so close up.

We saw the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, many falls and beutiful winding rivers and we caught Old Faithful erupting. We tried to do as much as we could in a full day, but of course there is never enough time.

We drove out of Yellowstone and through Grand Teton National Park to Jackson, WY. We will have more on Grand Teton tomorrow, since we only entered the park at 6pm, but the road through tonight afforded us some beautiful sunset views of the Tetons at sunset beyond Jackson Lake and some good moose sightings.

We made it to Jackson for a stroll and dinner. Now we are ready to crash at the Spring Creek Ranch.

Final update on license plates. Just when we were beginning to think that Conneticuters don't drive for their vacation, there it was -- CT, our final plate to see. That completes all 50 + DC. Fittingly it was on a fellow Odyssey. (FYI: we spotted 47 state plates just today in Yellowstone.)

You may recall that we first encountered trouble finding a hotel room on the go when we entered Provo. It turns out that was not an isolated event. While we have always found a place, more than once it has been the last room at our 2d or 3d try. In Bend, Crater Lake area, Coeur d'Alene, Missoula, and everywhere around Yellowstone and Jackson, we experienced difficulty in getting a room. Turns out, America is on vacation. Sorry to those of you reading this who are not on vacation, but the rest of America is on the road having fun. But don't worry, there is still time -- we had no trouble getting rooms in Kentucky and Kansas.
