States covered: Colorado - lots of up and down, altitude and north south, not too far West today
Mileage covered: Approx 385 (we forget to read odometer before getting out of car today)
Weather: Rainy and mostly overcast with patches of sun
Abby Meltdowns: 0 - Abby appeared to be in some kind of mountain-induced sleep coma most of the day -- we could pay for this tonight!
Highlights: Aeeign the Rocky Mountains, Colorado Capitol Building, big horn sheep sighting, first snow capped mountain sighting, passing Georgetown, CO
National Park Stamps of the Day: Rocky Mountain National Park
Stay Over: The Pines Lodge at Beaver Creek resort in Avon, Colorado
Phrase of the Day: "Watch for Rocks and Wildlife on Road" Actual message on digital oad sign on Rte 70 before Vail. We saw both.

Shout Outs (new feature): Special birthday shout out to our nephew Ben on his 9th Birthday and our brother-in-law Chris who shares the 8/2 birthday! Hope you guys had a good one. A belated Birthday shout out to our friend Nancy whose birthday was 8/1!

Trivia Question of the Day: Where did World's First Rodeo take place? Hint: We passed it. (That is a special one for rodeo-loving Ben on his birthday)

Bonus trivia question: Which of the following was not considered as a possible name for Colorado: Cibola, Idaho, Franklin, Montana

Answer to yesterday's trivia question: Our good friend Kevin Hart pulled out the win with Sen. Arlen Specter. We were trying to trick some of you into a more obvious, but wrong answer -- Bob Dole, who is also from Russell, KS, but is obviously no longer a Senator. Way to go Kevin!

Thanks to our guest blogger who allowed me to turn in early yesterday -- the depth of his "Oz" themed blog was much more than I can provide -- I go for the descriptive accounts and cheap laughs. (Re-read his entry if you want to appreciate the true depth) Now that we our out of Kansas and exploring beautiful Colorado, I am back at the helm.

Today we traversed Colorado taking in the beautiful Rockies. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate, but Abby sure did. We now know she certainly doesn't get car sick -- although the twists and turns of the Mountains seem to make her very sleepy. I think she was only away for about 25% of our time in the car.

After hitting Denver for a quick drive through and a tour of the Capitol, we made a spur of the moment decision to head up to Rocky Mountain National Park. We made good time getting there, but the weather kept getting worse. We had a couple of breaks in the clouds, but much of our ride in the Rockies was sopped in. There were whispers from the driver's seat indicating that we might need to come back some day -- add it to the list of National Park sites the O'Briens will visit again.

Tip for gamblers (yes, primarily Jer) - Try Black Hawk, CO.

We ended up at the beautiful Beaver Creek resort for the night. Now we need to catch some shut eye, which shouldn't be hard with the cool mountain air coming in the open windows.

A request has been made from a blog faithful to provide a highlight of tomorrow's destinations -- sorry, but no can do -- the beauty of this trip is that we go wherever the Odyssey, our imagination and the GPS take us for as long as one little girl can last...and we need to keep you coming back with anticipation...(ok, usually we just don't decide until breakfast!)
