After being delayed on the runway for an hour, I finally made it to Guatemala City. When we started to land, the person next to me started telling me the about the different volcanoes and lakes. Everything is covered with lush green trees. There are mountains of tree everywhere I looked from the sky.

When I got off the plane, I had a refreshing warm breeze coming from the open door in the coredor.  The airport was the cleanest airport I've ever seen and must have been recently updated. All the terminals have floor to ceiling windows that allow you to see the most amazing views outside. Customs took a minute to go through, but waiting for my bag is where I seem to get stuck most. I was praying that my bag didn't get lost or left behind. Finally, after 30 minutes I saw my read backpack come out.

I made it safe and sound to my hostel.  I am staying in Guatemala City which from what I understand is not the safest... however before I hear, "Allison be careful" I am staying in the safest zone which is sort of like the financial district in any city. Businesses like Citibank and hotels like Holiday Inn and some really nice conference centers are within blocks of my quaint little hostel. Also, most businesses, stores, banks, hotels all hire their own armed security so walking down any street you'll see between 3 -6 armed men with riffles. Whenever I travel to a country in Central or South America I never stay in the capital city because it tends to be a bit doggy. I can't say that about Guatemala City. Its very clean, quiet, may small shop names that we'd see back in the states like Naturalizer, Mc Donald's, burger King and some others. Today its in the mid 70's and the sun shining bright.

The people at the hostel have given me some good tips. They suggested instead of staying in Coban which is "gray", but to head straight to Semuc Champey which some people have called the 8th wonder. One girl that works here said that its her favorite place in all Guatemala and her favorite place to retreat to when she has time. I think I'll end up staying there until after New Years, but we'll see what happens.

Thank you all for all your comments before I was leaving. It never hurts to have a little piece of home while your traveling.

Allie
