Stayed in Puerto Lopez for a few days, drank a few cocktails on the beach, nearly always overcast so not as perfect as we had hoped, but we went whale watching which was cool. At this time of the year, humpbacked whales come to mate and calve off the waters here. The males attract a mate by making as much noise as possible, by singing, which you can hear from the boat, splashing their huge fins off the water which sounds like gunshots, and by throwing themselves completely out of the water, which is one of the most amazing things we have seen, looks more like a missile being launched and they land with the biggest belly flop you can imagine! Then on to Isla de la Plata (the poor mans Galapagos) where we nearly stepped on blue footed boobies and waved albatross.
But then the diarrhea started, which has not been so cool, so at the moment we are holed up in Guayaquil, not daring to move more than twenty paces from the nearest toilet!
When we eventually ventured from the room we walked along the Malecon 2000 which is a riverside park leading up to Santa Ana which has great views of the city, all very slick, clean and cool and not at all like the rest of Guayaquil. We got tickets to the Galapagos where we´re off to tomorrow.
