We departed a very cold Lima in the morning on a minibus that we thought was taking us all the way to Ica! How wrong were we, about 10 minutes after getting in the minibus we were dropped off at another bus terminal in Lima to board a big bus! It was so funny, bless the guys working there though, they must have seen the shock on our faces and helped us in every way they could!
The bus to Ica was comfortable enough and we drove straight there via a couple of other towns, 5 hours later we had arrived and we were suprised to see that our backpacks had also arrived - still in the compartment underneath the bus - which can be unusual we have heard in South America!
From Ica the only way to the small Oasis of Huacachina was by taxi, as soon as we walked off of the bus a local taxi driver was holding out a flyer from the hostel we had chosen and so we agreed on a price and jumped in the taxi for the 10 minute journey west to Huacachina. Huacachina is a gorgeous little place, the town is set around a lagoon, and is set against a backdrop of huge sand dunes - some bigger than those we saw in Namibia. Yesterday we chilled out around the lagoon, we enjoyed some lunch and had a beer before taking on the calf killing job of walking up the dunes for sunset. It was quite hot in the sun, we climbed and climbed resting every so often - it really is hard work! Soon enough we positioned ourselves on the edge of a dune and watched a beautiful sunset. As soon as the sun had gone down it was freezing and we swiftly went back to our hostel, wrapped up warm and headed out for some dinner.
Today we spent the morning around the lagoon enjoying some breakfast and then headed back into the sand dunes again - this time armed with sandboards! Sandboarding was so much fun, hard work but fun! We waxed our boards and me on my bum, Matt putting the skills he learned whilst surfing into practise again and moved down those dunes so fast it was unreal! Matt took on the almighty dune, we saw lots of the tours in the dune buggies stop there, when it was quiet, Matt climbed up and then swung himself down the dune, falling a little way but incredibly on his feet the almost the whole way down the steep dune! Tomorrow we are going to Nazca and depending on buses taking an overnight journey into the Andes to Cusco.
