We arrived in La Ceiba in time for the boat, we took a taxi to the port which was about 15minutes from where the bus dropped us off, in the terminal we joined in with the mass and queued to buy our tickets - the price had doubled from our guidebook!!! But as we would later find out - it was worth it.

The crossing was fairly smooth and nowhere near as rough as we had expected, upon arrival in Roatan we were accosted by taxi drivers, who even though we are still in Honduras generally speak English and quote everything in dollars! So, 15USD is a bit much for a taxi drive in our opinion, and so we walked by all of them and stood out on the main road. Soon enough a minibus pulled up, we ran over and explained where we wanted to get to, a lovely local Carribean lady told us to get this bus to the town of Coxen Hole, from there you take another bus to West in we jumped.

Two buses later we are wandering around the area they call West is much nicer than it sounds! We took the first room we looked at, it was a double room in a wooden apartment like cabin! We shared a kitchen and a bathroom. It was really nice and clean and the owners were friendly people. The food, accommodation, internet - most things on Roatan are so expensive, having a kitchen enabled us to cook for ourselves and buy in our beer and softdrinks from the supermarket.

The beach at West End was narrow and sandy, it was ok for a quick dip, but not to lie on there were far too many sand flies for that! So, we took a watertaxi around the coast to West Bay. West Bay was only about 10minutes in the watertaxi and the sands there were powdery white, it was so clean and beautiful. Looking at the sea it was turquoise, and when you are in the sea it was incredibly clear.

Roatan is world famous for its diving and snorlkelling, the reef here is the second largest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia - let me tell you it came a very close second for which was more gorgeous.
I had planned to do my dive here, the Bay Islands are known as the cheapest place in the world to dive - typical - it was cheap to do every dive you wanted except for the day course I wanted to do! If you are certified or want to get certified - it is cheap. So, again I gave my dive a miss and enjoyed the fabulous snorkelling instead. I saw hundreds of fish or all different shapes, sizes and colours, the coral and sponges in the sea were fabulous too, I did see another shark though! This time bigger than the one in Fiji and in the process of eating a black and blue striped fish - yep - I swifly moved out of the water!!

For two of our night in Roatan we cooked and ate in, we always drank in, and on another two nights we ate out, once in a delicious little local chicken place and another in a Mexican that as we now know served Texmex !! It was so good to get a burrito though, with lettuce and sour cream - you would NEVER get that in Mexico unless you were in Cancun I guess!

It was a beautiful place, and we could of stayed forever, but drinking a local Honduran brew on the beach watching an amazing sunset - we knew that we would leaving the next morning and taking the long journey south to the Capital Tegucigalpa and towards Nicaragua.
