The flight from San Francisco to Mexico City was just four hours, but we shot forward two hours when we landed as we had arrived in yet again a different time zone. As we flew in we could see how big and sprawling this city really is, mountains surround the city that is located in a valley and as we flew over the pollution was very evident with the smog that sat in the air just above the city.
Not prepared to travel on the metro after a long day we took a taxi to Chapultepec, the area in which we were staying with some more couchsurfing friends Charmaine and Willy. Soon after arriving we went to one of the many cafes in the neighbourhood for some well earned Mexican beer and we tryed Taco´s in Mexico for the first time! After reading through the menu we discovered that a lot of foods we class as Mexican are not truly Mexican after all, most of them derive from New Mexico and Texas in the States making TexMex!!! We were disgusted to find that Burritos, Fajitas, Sour Cream and Nachos all fall into this category! However, the food is still amazing, probably better - just not what we expected, and the beer more than made up for it!
Willy drove us around so that we could get our bearings later that night, we saw the Reforma which is Mexico Citys version of Paris Champs Elysee all lit up, along with the Cathedral and palace in the town square. The next morning we tackled the metro and headed into the Historic centre, the area is just so beautiful, the buildings so full of character and well looked after. We were ever so suprised to find huge fountains and statues along the streets and in the plazas, the Spanish history is very evident. The cathedrals we just spectacular, the churches inside - and the streets were a pleasure to explore, we stopped in the tile house and drank a rather expensive coffee - all ordered in Mexican Spanish, which intrestingly enough is very different from Spanish, the words are basically pronounced as they look - which we guess makes things a little easier - some of the place names though are totally different!! We are trying with the Spanish though, we have to, they dont speak a whole lot of English! We went to the top of the Latin America tower which offered superb views out across the city. That night we ate with Willy and Charmaine and some of their friends in another taco bar, we then went back to the apartment and exchanged travel stories, we are lucky that they travelled in parts of Central and South America and so gave us lots of tips and showed us their fabulous photos. Matt tryed about 6 different Tequilas that night too - we all stumbled off to be around 4am!
Yesterday we headed to the Chaptetec park and visited the castle that stands proudly there, we ate another gorgeous lunch from some of the vendors in the park and then headed to one of the worlds best museums - the musuem of anthropology. We walked back along Reforma and had an early night! Today we took the metro to the northern bus station and then found a bus heading 50kms north of Mexico City to Teotihuacan. This site is just spectacular - made famous by the aztecs this place was once a busy bustling city. We climbed the very steep steps of the small Temple of Quetzcoatl - this one may have been small but is was steep it was pretty scary! We walked along the avenue of the dead taking a detour and exploring the musuem which explained how the pyramids were used for burials and ceremonies. Then we took on the big one! We climbed to the top of the 64metre high Temple of the Sun. The views were amazing, and up there you really get to see how big this site is. Content with climbing the largest pyramid we had no need to climb the Temple of the Moon too, so we admired it from the base and then took a bus back to Mexico City.
So, tonight we may take an overnight bus south to Oaxaca or we may wait and take one in the morning. The journey is six hours and Oaxaca is supposedly a beautiful colonial city. Hope this finds you all well - Enjoy! Hugs AlinMatt xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx More thumbnails ...
