Golden Bay was our next stop, and we drove there wet and soggy after being dropped back in Marahau.
Golden Bay is in the far north of south island, the weather was kind to us for a few more days (so it should be its summer down here now!), and we pitched up the tent at a town called Pohara which was just east of Takaka.
We visited Pupu Springs - a place very important and significant to Maori people, the water in this lake was the clearest water we had ever seen, and the springs were very evident - just a shame that we werent aloud in the water! They are in fact the largest fresh water springs in all of New Zealand - we did a nice walk around them and the headed up towards Puponga Farm Park.
Puponga is home to Farewell Spit - this spit is huge and all along the coast you just see this golden length of sand jutting out into the water
We decided to drive on the gravel road up to Cape Farewell, there were some amazing rock formations up there and a typical touristy sign stating that you are at the most northern point on the south island. All in all it was pretty tranquil though as we were the only people there.
From Cape Farewell we drove to Whaterikki Beach (Ive prob got that name totally wrong but will correct later when i have the spelling!), we walked over farmland and around the many sheep along a clifftop path walk and were soon on the dark sandy dunes which seemed to go on forever! It was very impressive - Golden Bay is the name of the area, a popular place for Kiwis holidaying in their own country.
We saw what we wanted to see and moved on....

Farewell Spit Hiding behind the Trees
. You can go to the base of the spit yourself but not any further as its a protected bird habitat. We decided to drive on the gravel road up to Cape Farewell, there were some amazing rock formations up there and a typical touristy sign stating that you are at the most northern point on the south island.
