So we are finally at the top of the north coast, yesterday we drove from Exmouth to Port Headland and then this morning set off bright and early to here...Broome. After just over a week in Australia we have made a few worthy observations!

First and foremost how big this country really is! Everyone tells you how big it is, everyone tells you how there is nothing for hundreds of miles, its not until you are actually here and seeing it that you believe it! For example we picked up a couple of postcards a few days ago, on one there is an outline of Australia, and inside it they have put Germany, Italy, the UK and Ireland, Texas, New Zealand and Japan and there is still room left! On another we bought it shows Australia over the map of Europe....I think so far we have driven from France across the bay of Biscay and up to Northern Ireland!!!! Its just huge, we have clocked up 3500 kilometres in just over a week already, there really is nothing for miles, we have been driving on straight stretches of road through dusty scrubland for hours at a time, seriously sometimes we only see a couple of cars in three hours! Its quite scary really, we always have to be certain that we have enough petrol as at times you cant get petrol for a few hundred kilometres....you have to see it to believe it really.

The sun is SO strong, yes at times when we were in Perth it wasn't hot, at night we snuggled underneath the duvet to keep warm, but even so the sun is so strong, we are wearing factor 30plus and still having to reapply so often! The skin cancer statistics are shocking, the sun is stronger than we have ever known it to be anywhere...guess that hole above Aussie is huge....

The meat is amazing, we thought that the meat in Africa was super and it was, but here in Australia its equally as good if not better, no chemicals all totally fresh and so very tasty. The pies are amazing too, stuffed full of filling....and I never thought I would say it but they put our measly English pies to shame!

We can only speak for western Australia so far, but the people are so friendly and helpful, they always speak even if to just acknowledge you..........no worries is the motto!

So here we are in tropical Broome, we are staying just outside of the town centre at Cable Beach which apparently is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, tomorrow we shall see, the sunsets here are supposedly spectacular and its popular to take a camel ride along the beach at sunset which Matt has just arranged for us to do on Saturday.

Broome is geographically closer to Bali than Perth....imagine that!

And as our itinerary goes, we are in Broome until Sunday morning when we start heading inland and up towards Darwin.

Hugs

Ali N Matt
