We finally left Ko Samui yesterday morning, we were up at the crack of dawn and on the main street trying to flag down a sawngthaew to take us the 20kms to Samui's main town and port Nathon.
We eventually got one, and as we left it started to rain, we were dropped off right outside the port. We bought tickets and instead of just buying a ferry ticket across the sea to Donsak, the girl was able to sell us a ticket all the way to Ko Phi Phi! It wasnt expensive and it all went so smoothly we were shocked!
The ferry took almost 2 hours to the mainland, we found our bus easily enough when we got off and it took us to the port in the town of Krabi just under 3 hours away, on the other side of the peninsula.
Upon arrival in Krabi we had a 2 hour wait for our connecting boat to Ko Phi Phi, when we got on the ferry the seats were so small
We arrived in the village of Tonsai, Tonsai is the main village on Ko Phi Phi Don, this is the main island, this village was destroyed in the Tsunami, they have rebuilt a lot, there are now lots of hotels and cafes and shops once again, but you can tell that its recent, and you can easily see how devastated it was, there is a lot of hammering and building works going on still, its actually crazy to think that we were in Sri Lanka which is so far away, and the same Tsunami hit here - that just goes to show how powerful it was....same tsunami, same day, different place - scary..
We found ourselves a nice hut set back from the beach for a decent enough price, and last night we ate half a chicken each with salad and potatoes in a cheap beachside restaurant. Generally everything is more expensive here than on the mainland and on islands like Samui, which has a decent infrastructure - airports and the like, Phi Phi is much smaller, mush less populated and almost everything has to be shipped in, its unusual for us to find 2 cheap places on our first night!
Its still hot, but much cooler than where we have been, its low season, but there are still lots of people here - they need the business to be honest so it doesnt bother us
It is quite possibly the most beautiful place we have been so far, and has definatley made us see a different side to Thailand, Its still developed, but not anywhere near as much as the awful places we have been so far! I dont mean totally awful, I mean we loved certain places, but Ko Samui is so touristy, and Thailand is so western at times you feel that you are at home in the sun!
So, its our last week in Thailand before we cross the border into Malaysia....Bring it on!
