Today was the first day we weren't actually traveling! Jason and I were both excited to explore Prague and actually spend a lot of time in the city. He forced me to wake up around 8! I was so mad but I'm so glad he did because we definitely wouldn't have been able to see everything we wanted to. We first went to the Charles Bridge and saw it during the day. We walked around Old Town Square and saw Old Town Hall. The astronomical clock on Old Town Hall is apparently really famous and it should be because it's huge and so different! Right before every hour tons of tourists gather right in front of it to see a skeleton pop out and turn the hour glass. The 12 apostles come out, a bird flaps its wings, and crows when the hour strikes. The clock indicates time by season, Zodiac sign, and the position of the moon/sun. Its built on Town Hall Tower which is attached to Old Town Hall. There is a college behind the Town Hall which was cool to see kids our age. The square is very lively with a popular market and musicians always playing. The Church of the Virgin Mary is there also.
We then walked to the Jewish Quarter and had coffee and crossants and Jason had an apple roll which is apparently a typical breakfast item. We sat outside and talked for awhile and then went to the Olf-New Synagogue which is the oldest and is still in use even after the Nazis occupied it. We saw the Pinkasova synagogue which was our favorite because it is filled with testimonies to Jews during World War 2. It's covered with over 80,000 names of Jews that were murdered by Nazis. The Rudolfinum is a building overlooking the Vltava River. It was meant to be a concert hall but was converted to Parliament and is now a concert hall again. It had a view of the Charles Bridge and Prague castle. We went back to the market where we got lunch-an authentic Czeck meal of potatoes with cheese and bacon and veggies. We found a place called Bohemia Bagel. It was packed inside and was full of American food. There was no way we were going there! It was meant to be a place for Americans to go to get a "touch of home" but everyone in Czeck loves it! We walked to New Town and saw Mozarts House, Prasna Brana (Powder Tower-Kings lived there until they moved to Prague Castle and now gun powder is stored there!), and the Bethlehem Chapel. We walked down Na Prikope which is the street that separates Old and New Town. New Town is definitely more modern and we didn't like it as much as Old Town because it wasn't nearly as beautiful. It was filled with shops and the pace of the town was much faster than Old Town.
Later in the afternoon we walked to the Lesser Quarter and got ice cream-it's seriously every where! People are always eating it! We saw the John Lennon Wall and saw a family from Jersey screaming at each other which was quite interesting haha. We walked along all of the gardens and sat by the water with a great view of the castle, bridge, and Old Town. We then walked to dinner and had a couple of beers. We walked in and out of some stores and saw that glass was really popular and that's what they're known for. We walked to Town Square and went into a bar to watch an Arsenal soccer game. There were tons of kids our age there and it was so much fun! I think that was one of Jasons favorite parts! Later on we walked back to our hostel and it stormed all night! There was no air condition and the only window was above a bed so it was sooo hot all night!
