Flag of Nicaragua  , Estelí,
Sunday, August 2, 2009

My family and I took a nice little hike to a nearby waterfall - it really wasn't a difficult hike at all - a few dips and uphills on 5 km worth of dirt road (we were traveling with youngsters, so all the better).  It was just nice to be out and tramping through nature again.  We set off at a leisurely pace, stopping to admire the city of Estelí from a bird's eye view or to pick low-hanging jacote (a small, tart yellow fruit which has a very soft, almost velvety texture when ripe) from the trees on the roadside; The waterfall is nestled in the midst of tranquil, verdant hills.  As a bonus, we were the first group to arrive, so for a good half an hour, we had the waterfall all to ourselves.  Warmed up from our hike, the water was refreshingly chilly; it's always times like this when I realize how much I actually like (and miss) the water...
unfortunately when I
exited the water, I found all these ugly swellings all over my body; I
guess something in the water disagreed with my skin - ICK blah sensitive skin (p.s. I strongly
dislike dermatology.. a really gross specialty, if you ask me)  I
quickly rinsed off with water we had brought on the drip, and luckily it went away quickly...
kind of gave me a fright for a few minutes there though.. my host siblings and I went exploring a ways downstream, which revealed several quiant little eddies.  When we returned, we had more visitors, so we decided to head back.  The little ones got hungry, so we literally sat by the roadside and munched contentedly on the tortillas and avocados that we had brought.  We made slow progress back, but it was a fitting closure to a recreational day - hey, as the Nicas say, hay más tiempo que vida (there is more time than life) - who's rushing?
