"THURSDAY – LEEUWARDEN/MAASTRICHT – 09.07.09 Today is the day. Our train didn't go until 9.45am so had plenty of time to get organized. Cor and Christien took us to the station and as it was time to leave I did feel very sad. As the train pulled out of the station I had a few tears. My family means so much to me and of course we can make plans but we really don’t know when we will see them again. However we must march on or better said train on to Maastricht. Only one change at Utrecht which we did with no trouble at all except some bloke told me off for smoking but I pretended I couldn’t speak Dutch that shut him up. We arrived in Maastricht at about 3pm and caught a taxi to our hotel. Went for a walk after checking in and down come the rain. We were like 2 drowned rats walking back into our hotel. In the evening we went for another walk looking for somewhere to eat and we had no trouble at all seeing there are café’s everywhere
. We ended up at Vrythof which is the square where Andre Rieu is going to have his concert and sat at one of the terraces there. To our greatest enjoyment he was having a practice concert so we just stayed and enjoyed the music and him stopping and telling them it was not how he wanted it. At 11.30pm we decided to make for our hotel feeling just a little weary after the day of travelling when I realised my bag was gone. I wasn’t going to put this in the diary but it is part of our holiday and I don’t think I have ever felt so angry with myself for being so stupid. I did think my bag was safe but obviously I was wrong. Cancelled all the cards and went to bed there wasn’t much we could do about it.
FRIDAY – MAASTRICHT – 10.07.09
Got up in the morning and decided there was not much we could do about things so better get on with having a good time. Of course had to do the big trip to the police station and they are the same all over the world. It takes forever to make a statement total waste of time but one has to do the right thing. We did a bit of shopping and one of the shops we went into to buy Mac a new shirt just happened to be one of the shops that Andre shops in. I scored 2 great big posters because the ladies realised I was a great fan really don’t know why
. Not quite sure how we are going to get these posters home but we will try. Getting back to the hotel the manager decided that I should see the Andre Rieu Suite that they have there for him. I did feel very important standing in the room and Mac was busy taking photo’s. Pity I was in my little tracksuit because in the morning I didn’t feel like getting dressed up. We had an early dinner at the hotel after getting dressed up and then walked down to the square to take our seats for the concert. I had the Australian flag and it went up with every opportunity we got. What can I say about the show, it is very hard to put it into words. After the show we asked each other what our most favourite was and it was hard to chose. Andre had asked on the radio and the T.V. for brass bandsmen and thought about 80 would turn up but 400 of them came so he used them. They marched up the two aisles and then around the outside of the audience and one of the songs they played along with the orchestra was Nearer My God To Thee. Oh I cried it was the best and then Marisha the Australian opera singer came out and sang It is time to say good bye, more tears. The applause was so big that she ended up singing the last chorus again. I could rave on and on it was just so good and what a high light to finish our holiday on. We didn’t get back to our hotel until well after 1am but of course we were on such a high that I didn’t get to sleep until after three.
