From Alice's diary
" At 4.30pm we arrived at Miltenberg and nearly straight away left to go on a guided tour through this gorgeous little town. Only 9000 population and our guide was one in a million. She told us so many stories beside the history very interesting and funny. We heard about Hansel and Gretel which is a little bit different to the story we know but she also told us a story which nearly made me cry. She had a couple in her tour one day and the wife was carrying a bag with a bread around. She kept sniffing it and when she asked why she had the bread with her they didn't answer. After two hours she finally asked them again because was very curious. They lifted their sleeves and she saw the marks of the Auschwitz concentration camp on their arms. They were Jews who had survived the camp and the lady always had to have a loaf of bread with her because she was frightened that one day she would be hungry again Miltenberg - from the river

. They came back because they needed to know whether the strength of the people was still here as that was one of the reasons they had survived this terrible time. She asked them "is the strength still here?" and they said yes and they now can go home and die with the knowledge that the normal german people had not lost their strength. This story came about because there are still markings on some of the houses where Jews lived. After our tour we stopped in a pub for a drink and delighted the staff with our noise and laughter while we told each other yet more stories. (Kevin,Lois,Betsy,Noel and Mac and I.) Back to the boat for dinner and because we are staying here all night we went for another walk after dinner and by that time I was really tired and went to bed but I had one of the greatest days of my life."
