Friday I decided to head to get unlimited access tickets to Sydney Aquarium, Wildlife World, Manly Oceanworld and the Observation Deck (known locally as the golden gearstick). All this until June 2011 for $60...

First I went into the aquarium. Being a Friday afternoon it was relatively quiet, tourists hadn't arrived in droves for the weekend yet. It's a pretty good day out. The underwater walkways were great (if noisy with little boys shouting about the sharks). Also I got to see the clown fish a bit more clearly than in Ko Tao. The main thing about the aquarium was that it made me want to get diving as soon as I can again. Yeah it's nice to look at fish in a tank, but there is nothing like going down to their level in the sea. (and it's a lot less noisy!!)

After spending two hours submersed in all things aquatic I went in next door to the wildlife world. Lots of creepy crawlies at the entrance area didn't do anything for me except give me the shivers. You have to admit that the way bee and ant nests work are amazing though. Here I got to have a look at some Australian animals including, Kangaroos, wombats, bats, koalas and the highlight for me - Rex the crocodile. He was huge. And his story is quite interesting.

Rex was taken from the wild up in Darwin because he was a little "interested" in humans, as in, he was not afraid of us. He was sent to a croc farm where he was a great showman because of his size and the lack of scarring on his body. Apparently this is unusual for such a large male. However once he settled in it was time for him to earn his keep - meet the ladies. The keepers there introduced a lady into his pen. Unfortunately Rex was a little upset by this so he, um, killed her... :(

The keepers there thought, okay, maybe he's not settled in enough yet. We'll call it water under the bridge and give him more time. Nearly a year later they felt it was time to try again. Well, you can guess how well it went given his current location. Rex the ladykiller was then up for grabs and since the keeper here at wildlife world wanted the largest croc he managed to secure Rex for Wildlife world. Which is great news for Rex but even better for us who get to see him! And I suppose it's the best news for lady crocs everywhere.
