It was an entertaining evening at the Fantasea Show in Patong on Lisa's last night (even though Lisa fell alsleep in the middle of it!) and we have never seen so many animals in a stage show - how on earth they teach chickens to act, we will never know!!!. We waved goodbye to Steve & Michelle and wished them well for the rest of their honeymoon.
After quite a late night, we then all got up early to wave a tearful goodbye to Lisa as she left for Bangkok airport at 6.30am. We decided to stay for one more day in Phuket and then started on our 'supposedly' 4 hour journey to Ko Samui - more like 12 hours!!! We were not very happy after travelling 3 times as long as we were told, on a very UN-airconditioned coach and then on arrival, finding the accommodation we had pre-booked was certainly not like the brochure (that will teach us to use the Lonely Planet!) and although we had paid a small deposit decided we were not staying there (damp & smelly). So, off we trundelled down the road to another one, which was very nice and set on the north end of the beach with a pool. However, after a very sleepless night due to a double 'waterbed' that Lou & I shared, Karen & I went off in search of alternative accommodation. We then realised the other end of the beach was much better and without rocks so we found a really nice bungalow that would accommodate all 3 of us comfortably - in 3 single beds!! Again set on the beach with a lovely pool, this turned out to be an excellent choice (if not a little over budget for us, but many thanks to Karen who paid more than her fair share) as it was in a perfect place right in the middle of all the beach restaurants and bars.
We loved the Island, it had beautiful white sand, clear blue water and load of bars that did cocktail happy hours!!!! The restaurants & bars are all along the beach and a lot had padded mats with head rests attached that you could lay on, set out along the sand we would spend many a night with cocktail in hand, gazing up at the stars, only 3 feet from the seashore - what more could we want - Karen was now in heaven and didnt want to come home. To complete the perfect atmosphere, the food in the restaurants couldnt have been better and we were only paying about 4 pounds each at night including drink.
On Wednesday, we decided to hire a couple of mopeds out for the day for the tidy sum of 7.50 including petrol!! Karen wasnt too keen at first and therefore went on the back. We had a great day travelling round the island, visiting several places including the Temple housing an un-decomposed Monk who died some 20 years ago, but is still fully intact - he sits, in lotus position in a glass cabinet wearing his orange robe & sporting a pair of sunglasses!!! Honestly, it is real and its weird because his hair & nails apparently still grow and they have to cut them occasionally?? From there we tried to go up to a waterfall, but after getting stuck halfway up a steep dirt track we found out that due to drought, it had dried up!! However, we decided (once back on flat soil) this was a good place for Karen to practise her driving skills and after a quick lesson, she completed a couple of laps of the dirt track and was then raring to go on the open road!! We also vistied a bizarre snake farm with a very weird show - Thai men who apparently seem to have a fettish about putting live snakes & scorpions down their pants!!!!! It wasnt very impressive and yet cost us more than the bikes!! The rain then started and after sheltering until it passed we made our way back after a thoroughly enjoyable day. The bikes didnt have to be back until 11.00 the next day, so Karen & I got up early and went out to the other side of the island for a few hours, Karen now a confident bike rider & Lou opting for a quiet morning lay in for once.
Spending our days lazing about by the pool or walking along the beach (mainly Karen) and then eating & drinking on the sand at night, we had a great time and Karen was very reluctant to leave us on Friday afternoon when we had yet another goodbye. Just back to the two of us now, although we were not completely alone as we had met a great couple from Melbourne, Alan & Joyce and they kept us suitably entertained for the rest of our stay, and on their last night took us out for cocktails at sunset and we both staggered back along the beach a couple of hours later, refreshingly merry!! A perfect end to a perfect 10 days and we were both very sad to leave Ko Samui on Tuesday morning but the border calls and we only have 4 days to reach Malaysia.
Lots of love to all, Ali & Lou xxxxxxx
Ps: for those wondering what happened to the Full Moon Party, originally it was supposed to be on the Weds, but as it was a buddist holiday and all the bars have to shut early it was put off and in the end we decided not to go. Have to save that for next time!!
