Alex: As always in cities we didn't do very much in Brisbane! Our first night there we made full use of the hostel bar and were a bit to hung over the following day to do very much. Instead, after the obligatory hangover breakfast of instant noodles, we headed to the Botanical gardens with a couple of litres of fruit juice and a trashy magazine. The gardens are really pretty, although the drought is beginning to show on the yellowed, dry grass. The walkway along the river front is lovely and there are some enormous trees to relax under, perfect for working through a hangover.
The following day we thought we should really see something of the city so went to the parkland on the south side of the river to wander around its weekend market. There is also a man-made beach on the river front which looks really nice and I imagine is fantastic when the weather is a bit warmer, I think we would have made full use of it if it wasn't for the threatening clouds overhead. Instead we took refuge in the Queensland Museum, which is really aimed at kids so it was right at our level. Most of it is stuffed and fiberglass animals and quite a lot of bugs, many of which are too big to think of running about loose. They also had the only remaining German tank of the 1st World War - it look way to big and clunky to be very effective.
Our last evening in the city we finally made it out of the hostel (which we had threatened to do the previous two evenings) and headed up to Chinatown town for some very yummy Thai curries. Ending up in a pub in a trendy area of the city surrounded by some very drunk blokes and a slightly dubious singer who struggled to be heard over the heckles.
