Dean: During our travels in North America we spoke to quite a few fellow traveler about places they had been and things that they had done. Quite a few recommended learning to dive while in Central America (cheap fees, warm clear water, lots of fish!). Back home before our trip, we had looked into learning to dive at our local dive school, but the costs were high and the thought of diving off the North West coast of England put us off a bit! We therefore decided that we would spend 3 days / 4 nights on one of the Bay Islands in Honduras, and so selected Utila (as it is one of the cheapest places to learn in the Caribbean).
On the way over here we were told by a fellow traveller that there are three lies commonly spoken on Utila:- 1)"I'm only staying a few days." 2)"I'm not drinking tonight!" and 3)"I'm leaving tomorrow." I thought that he was talking through his...
Well it's now the following Wednesday night (5 nights in) and we are still here, and will be for the next few days! We have drunk every night (no real surprise there!) and I keep saying to Alex that we will definitely leave tomorrow!
The diving is absolutely excellent. I'm totally hooked. It rates even higher than bungee jumping, parachuting and even kickboxing! I have just completed my Open Water Diver Course (yeah me!) and tomorrow I am starting the Advanced Open Water Diver Course. This means that I can do further dives as we carry on travelling (e.g. Costa Rica, Panama, Galapagos Islands, New Zealand, Australia), if I get the urge...

Heading off for some food now but I will carry on telling you all about it tomorrow! You may have noticed that I'm really excited about it all!!!

Alex: As you will be able to gather Dean loves diving - I hate it and didn't even finish my open water! I had some Asthma issues so was told I couldn't dive at one dive school so I went elsewhere (after a very interesting trip to the doctors - it took from 7am to 12pm to have a basic check up, the doctor was an American with a massive beard, bright Hawaian shirt, mismatched shorts and industrial specs and, like many people here, didn't wear any shoes.) I tried going into the water on 3 separate occasions and even did one of the skills (emptying my mask) but I just felt so clumsy and bulky that my whole body was screaming to go to the surface. I'm quite happy, I feel I gave it enough of a shot and as I have watched people going into the water I have just felt glad that I didn't have to do it. Fortunately the snorkeling is really good. One day I hired a kayak and paddled out to the reef and snorkeled there for a bit. I also managed to pick up a hitch hiker for a bit, as I was kayaking by this guy was yelling at me and pointing in various directions so I went over to find out what was going on and he jumped in took over the paddling and just pointed our bits of reef (he only spoke Spanish) and stuff until I convinced him to go back - very odd! I've also been out with one of the dive boats and snorkeled at one of the dive sites. The water is so clear that I don't think I missed anything by not diving and I got a nice tan on my back! The fish are so pretty and really not bothered by these random people gawking at them. Its also been nice to spend a bit of time in one place chilling out, that said I'm feeling ready to get back on the road, if I can convince Dean, the common story here is "I just came for a few days to do my Advanced course that was a year ago!"

Dean: The Advanced Open Water course was excellent. Less classroom and more time in the water! We did two deep dives (one to 30m), a wreck dive (which was so cool even though we did not get to go inside the ship, as you need even more training for that...), plus a few others to get me to the advanced level. All in all I was very happy in Utila! I really like the diving but Iīm not sure it will be the same in the North Sea! Maybe check out Cornwall or if thatīs no good the Med...
