Dean: We carried on down south through Mexico to Oaxaca. It would have been interesting to stay in Mexico City for Independance Day (16th Sep) but we decided it was best to leave them to it (as there is a bit of political tension around at the moment, due to contested election results). Saying that, Oaxaca may not have been the best of towns to choose - it is the center of political turmoil (something do do with teachers protesting the privatisation of schools) and so could potentially be a hot-spot on Independance day.

Oaxaca is a nice town, but there is a lot of political graffiti (in the center every building is covered) and the blocked-off roads were a bit worrying at first. Unfortunately, I was not feeling my best - some of the Mexican food had disagreed with my stomach and they were fighting it out (I'll leave the rest to your imagination). Needless to say, I can now describe in great detail the bathroom of our room in the hostel! Later on in the evening we went for a short walk around the main square, which was very busy with people celebrating and letting of hugely load homemade fireworks etc.

The next morning (Saturday), I still was not very well and so stayed in our room reading/near the bathroom. I think Alex quite enjoyed herself - she left me to it (she is the first to admit that she is not the best of nurses!) and spent all day using the hostelīs free Internet! We popped out for some food in the late afternoon and then spent the evening watching a DVD ("Click" with Adam Sandler).

On Sunday, I felt a bit better so we had a proper look around town, checking out a few old churches and eating in a restaurant overlooking the main square. In the evening we got the overnight coach to San Cristobal.

P.S. I'll leave you all to look up what Montezumaīs revenge is (but you may know it by a few other names - Deli belly, etc).

Alex: Despite Dean's illness I quite enjoyed Oaxaca and just chilling out a bit, plus Dean being ill did wonders for my appetite! Independance day was interesting, it was a bit of a cross between Guy Falkes night and New Year with everyone congregating in the town square, Dean already mentioned the fireworks (which were a little scary, especially if you were slightly too close when they went off) plus everyone was waiting for "El Grito" which is when the Mexican President (plus representatives in the town squares all over Mexico) declares "Viva Mexico" (I'll let you guess what it means!) and rings a bell, he also "viva.."īs a few of the revolutionaries. All good fun.
