Alex: Zacatecas was our stop on the way to Ciudad de Mexico and it is a very pretty colonial town - the Mexico we had been expecting, all cobbled streets and bright coloured buildings. We arrived at 7.00am on a Sunday after a night bus - bad timing, it wasn't yet light, nothing was open and no one was up. We stopped at the hostel we had planned on staying in and it was full (either that or he wanted to get rid of us so he could go back to bed), as was another we found... after a little bit of a wander we stumbled on a cheap hotel that had space and went for a well deserved nap. In doing this we had our first surprise, climbing the stairs made us very breathless, which meant we had either become very unfit very quickly or we were quite high up, fortunately it was the latter (2500m) and when we looked Creel had been at a similar elevation and Chihuahua had been about 1000m lower but we had always been on the ground floor and had not climbed any hills so we hadn't noticed, oh well at least we didn't have any altitude sickness :-)
We bypassed one major tourist attraction (the silver mine with tours only in Spanish - we aren't that good yet) for the other in the town - the cable car, it actually gave really good views and meant we could actually get to the top of a hill without breathlessness - bonus. At the end we got more good views of the town, a few traditional market stalls and some statues of Mexican Revoutionaries (including Pancho Villa whose house we had been to the previous day) we also got an incredible rain storm that meant we had to shelter in the local nunnery! The rest of the day we just wandered around the town which was very pleasant, we even managed to have 2 whole meals (a bit of a record recently, we don't seem to be able to get into the habit of eating regularly).
It's on to Mexico City next which I am looking forward to and dreading in equal measure!
