Dean: We arrived at Rapid City at about 17:00 on Monday evening, just as it started to rain. We opted for the taxi to the motel (no hostel in Rapid City), a wise decision as the rain was just the start of a big storm that swept across the mid-west - the lighting was very impressive!
On Tuesday we went shopping at the local Mall and I finally brought some new trainers to replace my current ones - I've had them since we travelled to Ecuador and they are very well travelled shoes! It was quite sad to drop them in the bin (but Alex said that customs may not like the smell if we packaged them up and sent them home, and they may end up having to undertake a controlled explosion)! Saying that, the new ones were a bargain - clothes etc really are a good buy over here in the USA!
Tuesday evening we went up to Mount Rushmore, which was worth seeing (very patriotic place for the USA). We couldn't decide if the faces of the presidents were smaller than we expected or just far away (Father Ted would be have been proud of us - "the ones in here are really small, the ones out there are far away!"). We decided in the end that they were big and we were just having trouble getting the perspective right.
