Dean: Early morning Greyhound from Banff to Calgary, arriving at about midday. We dropped our packs off at the hostel and then went for a look around. We have time Calgary just right, as this week is the annual Calgary Stampede - a festival of all things Cowboy (and Cowgirl). There was not much going on in town on the Monday afternoon, but we got into the hang of it on Tuesday...
Tuesday - Up early and over to one of the town squares, where they do free breakfasts while the Stampede is on! We then walked around town, checking out all of the morning activities - square dancing, parades, mock gun-fights, etc. We then went over to the Stampede Park, which is a mix of a large fairground, exhibitions, agriculture shows, an Indian village (the Indian's live in the wigwam village for the whole Stampede festival), and the rodeo. In the afternoon the rodeo started (13:30), and we decided to splash out on some tickets to see our first rodeo! It was really good, much better than I expected. They had steer-wrestling, calf-roping, bronco riding, bareback bronco riding (no saddles on the horses, rather than no shirts on the riders!). It was all very professional and the riders (men, women and kids) were all very good. It is definitely something I would recommend and would like to see again. Maybe next time we are in Canada...
In the evening we out into the North end of town, where a distant second cousin of mine now lives (Diane). Diane and I have never met, in fact we did not know that each other existed until our mothers got e-mailing and Diane's mum Wendy told Diane we were in Canada! Diane is married to Mike and they have two kids (Megan and Joey) and a dog (Billy!). It was a really nice evening - nice food, a few beers, and lots of talk about the family. It was nice to hear about a side of the family I never new. Diane pointed out a picture of her Grandad (Danny - who is my Grandad's brother). I can see the family likeness. It would be good to have a family reunion at some point - maybe something to arrange when we get back to the UK...
Wednesday - went and checked out the Calgary Fort, which was interesting but there is not much of the fort left, so I was a little disappointed. We had another wonder around town, and then in the evening we got the over-night bus to Vancouver.
