When you get up late complete with hang over a boat trip might not seem the best idea – especially with Dean’s record with boats – but actually it was perfect. The temperature is scraping 40C so the cooling breeze on the river was perfect. Our long-tail boat trip took us around Thoniburi – the canal based city on the other side of the Chao Phraya.

Houses on stilts line the canal – some swish and new, others made from whatever was to hand and looking like they might crumble into the canal at any moment, all interspersed with brightly coloured wats twinkling in the sun.

The trip ended with a wander around a very different wat – Wat Arua. The centre piece is a tower which, instead of being tiled with coloured glass is covered in broken pottery. Far more understated. A steep climb to the top gives gorgeous views of the sprawl of Bangkok.

After my traditional hangover cure – noodle soup – from a street vendor we headed for a belated trip round the museum. The walk took us first past lots of stalls first selling interesting, but unappetising, looking dried fish then past stalls selling hundreds of dinky Buddhist amulets, which were being inspected closely by the Thai’s.

The museum buildings are amazing as are some of the exhibits, in particular the funeral chariots – the Thais know how to use gold and glitter and even the death of royalty is an excuse for as much pomp, ceremony, glitz and gold as possible.

Generally though we found the museum fairly uninspiring – that could have been the heat talking though.

We’re sad to be leaving Bangkok tomorrow but excited for what’s coming next.
