"Beach with massive, crashing waves. Scooter hire. Seafood. Lots of locals and a lovely French neighbour" was Tweeks' summary of this fabulous small town. In fact we were on our way up the coast a little further to a smaller village. We had been advised months ago now to pay this place a visit. Damn glad we did.
In the summer of 2006, a three metre high tsunami hit the coast and destroyed sea front property and claimed several lives. Destruction caused by of this disaster is still quite evident with broken down buildings along the town front and further up the coast. The guy I spoke to said he watched it arrive, it broke his leg and almost washed him out to sea. He held onto a tile roof to save his life. He hasn't dare go back into the water to surf since.
We hired a couple of scooters and ran up the coast to check out Batukaras. O'boy, lets go stay there for a while!
